Context description: This image is from the front of Votes for Women, a British suffrage newspaper edited by Christabel Pankhurst. (Purvis 2018) Her parents, Emmeline and Richard Pankhurst, were liberal socialists and active proponents of women’s suffrage. Emmeline was well-known as an advocate of militant tactics in the fight for women's suffrage. On October 10, 1903, Christabel, Emmeline Pankhurst, and local socialist women formed the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) at the Pankhurst home at 62 Nelson Street in Manchester. The WSPU led the militant wing of Britain's suffrage movement. In 1907, Frederick and Emmeline Pethick Lawrence founded the newspaper Votes for Women, the first newspaper of the WSPU. Christabel became Chief Organiser and key strategist of the WSPU. She took over editing Votes for Women because of Emmeline and Frederick Pethick Lawrence's resistance to militant tactics. The WSPU renamed the newspaper The Suffragette, and Christabel used it to promote more militant tactics.
